How becoming a book blogger has changed my reading habits

I’d been thinking about writing this blog post for months and now is the right time, I guess. I had seen a somewhat similar topic on this week’s Top Ten Tuesday (but I don’t participate in it), and I decided to write about the changes I’ve discovered in my reading habits ever since I’ve started blogging about books. So, let’s get started.

1. I write my thoughts about a book while reading it

I always forget what I think while reading a book, so I have to write down my thoughts about the book and the things I need to mention in my review of it. So, that has definitely changed. Before I was a book blogger, I didn’t have to note it down.

2. I don’t reread books as often as I used to

Before my blog came into existence, I used to reread every book I purchased, and I used to be happy when the book was longer because I just loved reading and knowing the characters so much. Now, I don’t reread books but I’m glad I’m getting to know about so many new stories.

3. I read so many different genres now: When I’d first started reading books, I used to read Young Adult realistic books especially set in high school because that’s what I related the most to. I’ve started reading so many different kinds of books now. I read YA, NA, literary fiction, non-fiction, dystopian, poetry, and even anthologies. I’m always trying to read outside of my comfort zone and expand it.

4. I purchase more books than before: Before I only used to purchase about four or five books a year and I would read them and re-read them. Now, I purchase three to four books a month because I have to write about them on my blog.

5. I read shorter books: Before, I used to read books that were long usually. I didn’t really care if a book was 700 pages long. Now, ever since I’ve started writing book reviews, I like it when I find a short book, and when I actually have to read a big book, I procrastinate. I read graphic novels and books told in verses and I’m reading a book told in text messages, which is cool and they’re really short, which is a “plus point”.

6. I read *almost* every day:

Before I started blogging, I used to read whenever I was bored. Now, I read almost every day. And I really like the fact that I can read so many books in a year. I also feel incomplete without a book, and I always read before bed.

7. I worry because of reading: Not sure how to explain it, but reading was an activity I used to do to de-stress. However, after I started my blog, I started stressing out about it, comparing my readings with other people’s. I don’t do it anymore since September and my stress level has waned A LOT. But yeah, blogging used to give me stress.

8. I don’t read book series‘: Before, I used to love reading series and follow the stories of the characters. I barely read new series’ now, and whenever I do, I just don’t like it when it has more than three books! I also prefer standalones!

I’m really happy that I read books and write about them. Most of the changes that have occurred in my life because of reading and blogging have been positive. I enjoy writing about books, and I really love writing on my blog, which is something I hadn’t really expected when I had started it. So…

Has blogging changed your reading habits? How? Let’s talk in the comments below.

  1. I’ve very similar changes happen to me since becoming a blogger, although I actually began re-reading a lot more than I used to. Great post. Made me nostalgic a bit.

    1. Thank you! ❤ I’m glad to know you could relate to it. I’ve begun rereading too in the last two months and it always feels good to go back to a book you love. 😄😊

    1. I agree. I really think it’s important to keep in mind that it’s just a hobby and you should read and blog however you want.

  2. So relatable. The writing thoughts down though has really made it so I actually think about what I’m reading instead of just spacing out. It’s made me a more engaged reader which has been overall more enjoyable! But the stress thing I get that too. Lol I have to remind myself that this isn’t my job and no one will care if I don’t publish the review today.

    1. I’m glad you found it relatable😄. I totally agree with your thoughts. I’ve found that writing thoughts down is a really good habit. Sometimes writing them down makes me understand what I’m actually feeling about a certain scene. And worrying about your hobby sucks, especially because you end up with nothing to do to decompress.

      1. Definitely! But I still do very much enjoy reading even if i think about it a bit differently now. I do find myself more engaged with books and more of an active reader than strictly passive. And at least now with the blog I can actually talk about some of those thoughts about the books instead of just having them wasted on people who don’t care about books at all

  3. It’s amazing what being a book blogger can do to change the way we read! I think all of the things on your list are relatable to me, although I don’t take notes on every book. Great post.

  5. Stressing with reading?? Now I see why you are kookoo. You are scared that you won’t be able to write a lot of reviews if you read one book at a time and then you try to read all the books together. Stop stressing, add more book-related content to your blog. Like I have messy bookworms or reading conversations. Blogging doesn’t mean only writing about books if you selected books you can write about anything Nikki. Chillax. It’s your blog and nobody will judge you. Not even me. I write reviews 4 to 8 times a month if I have Netgalley books if not only 4. Stop stressing. You are missing all the fun bloggers have. Now look for some funny book content. 😁🙂✌ love you cutie stop stressing

    1. Suzan, no, that’s not it. I don’t read multiple books at a time, except sometimes, and that’s only when I like all of them and they’re all different and I can’t wait to read them (they’re all so amazing😍, you can’t blame me). I only write reviews about 5-6 times a month and I’m totally okay with it, really. I used to worry until September (now I don’t even know why I used to do that). After that, I haven’t spent a single second worrying about my blog and reading. I’ve been enjoying, and I only ever worried because I wanted to write more and I wasn’t able to, and also because I was reading books that I didn’t like much just because I had to write about them…I have eliminated that stress now by reading only what I like. My blog is full of content that doesn’t require reading books and I really like it this way. I know nobody will judge me and I’m really happy about it. I am having fun because I love my blog now, which wasn’t the case before. Love you too, adorable homo sapien ❤😘

      1. I am glad you aren’t going to be forced into a mental asylum. Try reading 2 or 3 books in a start. The 3rd book can be a comic if you can keep it.
I am glad you are reading much and nice stuff. Take care adorable homo sapien. 💖😍

  7. I’ve had very similar changes! But… I think I’m rereading MORE than i used to! Because I’m reading for my blog sometimes, with all the ARCs, I find myself throwing up my hands and going back to an old favorite… pretty often 🙂 it’s so interesting how blogging changes things!!

    1. Kate, I’m glad you could relate ❤! It’s amazing to see how it changes our reading habits. I too think I’m rereading quite a bit more recently (it helps when I can’t decide which book to read next and also helps me when I’m worried about reading or something) but I used to reread a lot more. But no complains! 😄

  8. I can definitely relate to several of those points, but whats interesting is I find I buy less books now because there are so many review books available. Although every once in a while there will be a book I want to read and can’t get as a review copy or from my small local library so I will buy it. For #7, I do stress over reading, but not due to reviews cuz I naturally know my vocabulary is probably limited and I can’t express myself like others can. Instead, I stress about how many books are in my review list. I want to be at a point where I’m approved for a book and can read it immediately. I can’t now because in my mind there’s a set order to read in (like publication date), but I’m getting very close to having that freedom to read whatever, whenever.

Oh yes! That makes sense. I don’t ask for a lot of review copies though because I always start worrying when I receive an ARC. Being a mood reader doesn’t help, and the pressure to finish reading a book before a fixed date is just too much for me and I always end up in a reading slump when I try to read something I’m not in the mood for. So I always read whatever I want whenever I want. And I agree with you! I also feel like I can’t express myself as easily while reviewing because English is not my first language.

  9. Numbers 7 and 3 also happened to me. I think the genre thing is partly to do with me accepting indie fiction review requests from genres I didn’t read that often. Great post, it was really interesting!
