Book Review: The End of the F×××ing World

The End of the F×××ing World by Charles Forsman

My Rating: 🌟🌟.5

‘At 16, I pretended to fall in love with Alyssa.’

Meet James and Alyssa, two teenagers facing the fears of coming adulthood. As their story is told through chapters which alternate each character’s perspective, however, this somewhat familiar teenage experience takes a more nihilistic turn. With James’s character becoming rapidly more sociopathic, they are forced to take a road trip that owes as much to Badlands as The Catcher in the Rye, and which threatens both their futures forever.

One of the most talked-about graphic novels of recent years, The End of The Fucking World marks Charles Forsman’s UK debut.

This book is a perfect example of wasted potential. I had been meaning to read it for a long time, especially because I want to watch the series, and I’m not really happy that I read it?

The End of the Fucking World is the story of James–who thinks he’s a sociopath–and Alyssa–who is his girlfriend–who are on a run. A series of weird and crazy things happen in that time, and that’s what this book is about.

This book is very short. I finished it in about 15-20 minutes, and I think I could have watched an episode of the series instead in that time! Even after reading the whole book, I have no idea what it was about. It didn’t leave any impact on me, and I have already forgotten the things that took place in it.

I didn’t even like the art — it was extremely simple and very boring. The story had some potential, but it wasn’t executed well.

All in all, I didn’t like it much, and I’m gutted because I’d thought it would be better than it was. So, I won’t really recommend it to anyone. Maybe just watch the series. I really hope the series is amazing.

Did you know about the book series? Have you read it? Do you like the Netflix adaptation? Let’s talk in the comments!

  1. I saw the trailer of this show on Netflix the other day but didn’t know this was based on a graphic novel. Too bad it didn’t live up to your expectations though. Maybe the series will make up for it😊

I’m so sorry the book wasn’t for you though!! Hopefully the series was an upgrade as I enjoyed it a lot. At least the book was only short and didn’t take up too much of your time!! 🙂

  3. I didn’t know they made a book out of this series. I loved the first season but, have yet to watch the second. How disappointing that the book didn’t live up to its potential!

    1. I think the book came out in 2011. Not sure tho! 🙈 Yeah, it was a bummer 😦 It could’ve been a lot better imo. I watched the show (both of the seasons) and I LOVED it! So glad you loved it too and hope you love the second season !❤💕
