My Thoughts

Have I forgotten how to “review” books? I think yes. I have no idea how to start a book review. I also forgot to write it yesterday lol. I guess it’s alright, considering that I’ve not done it in ages. I guess it would take some time for me to get in the swing of things. Anyway, so I read Behind Closed Doors in the month of April, and I enjoyed it.

Behind Closed Doors is a story of a couple that lives in a mansion and their lives are quasi-perfect. But, there are so many secrets. The line that drew me to this book was “sometimes the perfect marriage is a perfect lie.” And I needed to read it right away!

This book started a little slow, which is okay because when it suddenly took off, it managed to knock me on the floor. It was really enjoyable for the better part of it and always managed to keep me on the edge of my seat. I’m glad that I read it when I did. Oh, and this book is super creepy — whatever happens in the book could happen to anyone, and that’s what’s super scary about it. That’s probably why I hated and loved it at the same time. The story made me feel different things at the same time — I couldn’t put it down. My mind was a tangle of emotions. I couldn’t damp down my anger, my fear, and my sympathy for the characters. They were spilling out in the form of tears and shouts.

It’s a pretty basic book about a controlling, manipulative, and sadistic person that goes to great lengths to achieve their revolting desires while maintaining a charade of a decent human being.

I enjoyed reading about the characters in this book, and I particularly liked one character, who is the main character’s sister. She gave me hope, and I really wanted things to get better because of her. One of the characters gives me strong Joe Goldberg vibes, and to know who that is, you’d have to read this book because I ain’t spoiling anything.

I enjoyed the writing, and I love reading books from the first-person point of view, mostly because it makes me feel close to the character. That’s why I’m glad the author decided to write it in the point of view of the victim, which made it easy to sympathize and feel those strong emotions. The only reason I’ve given this book 3.5 stars instead of a perfect five is that it started a bit slow and was a little difficult to get into in the beginning, and it was just a very simple thriller.

This book has depictions of physical and psychological torture which includes playing mind games, starving and gaslighting. It also includes mentions of animal abuse, murder, panic attacks, and other difficult subjects. Only read it if you can deal with reading about these subjects.

Since I enjoyed this book, I would love to read more of this author’s books as soon as possible. I would recommend it to people who don’t read many thrillers, only because it’s engaging and easy to read.
